I'd rather be sad than mediocre

I'd rather be devastatingly sad than mediocre.
I'd rather be a victim of my grandiose romanticism than my poorly constructed academic plan.
At least, at true failure you find appeasement, at vague disappointment you find compromise.
And I can't think of anything worse.
